Preparing & writing these recent articles on Love is, and has been, a Big challenge to myself.
Trying to make sure I don’t just ‘Talk the talk’, but also ‘Walk the Walk.’
“Love is not self-seeking” is another hard thing not to do. The opposite means being selfless and puts another’s needs and well–being before our own interests. Easy to say; hard to execute.
Daily, I try and pray that I will put my actions (love) to the interest of others and seek to be an encouragement to others. Sadly, I don’t always succeed but this is my plumbline: hopefully through my actions of service, encouragement and just being there for others I can hopefully keep on trying to prefer others.
When I do fall into the trap of focussing on myself and being selfish, I remind myself the remedy is love; love for others. Being concerned for others will help us tilt the scales and equal the balance of the natural concern we have for ourselves.
“Selfishness is the greatest curse of the human race.”
– William E Gladstone
Wow, if this true what can you and I do to rectify this in our lives? Nikolai Berdyaev suggests that:
“The most selfish people are the ones who do not love themselves.”
More and more people of every age, from teenagers to OAPs, are acknowledging that their lack of ability to love themselves and feel good about themselves has a huge impact on how they relate and see others. Maybe what Don Miguel Ruiz says does affect us more than we think:
“Selfishness comes from poverty in the heart, from the belief that love is not abundant.”
Let’s make a conscious decision to make an effort to be positive about ourselves by liking and loving ourselves and others too.
Enjoy the game.
