Mick’s Fundraiser Walk for SYCLS

On 27th July 2024, one of SYCLS’ Chaplains, Mick Burgan, along with his son Craig, completed an incredible 20km walk to raise funds for SYCLS. On a bright sunny day, Mick began his journey at New York Stadium in Rotherham, braving the sweltering heat as he trekked through Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield, and finally ending at Bramall Lane Stadium. With over 24,000 steps taken, Mick raised an impressive £623.38!

The funds raised will directly support SYCLS and our Chaplaincy and Listening services across various organisations in South Yorkshire. We partner with schools, business, hospices, fire stations, charities, GPs and sports clubs – including some of the very venues Mick visited during his walk. Our Chaplains and Listeners provide a listening ear, and encouraging word and a supportive act to those in need. With 66% of people reporting they have no one to talk to about their mental health, relationships or financial struggles, we know it’s vital that SYCLS’ Chaplains and Listeners are there to fill that gap. As one person told us, “I’ve not told anyone. I say I’m fine, but I’m not. I’m struggling.”

We are incredibly grateful to Mick, Craig and everyone who donated to their fundraiser. Without your generosity, we wouldn’t be able to continue reaching out to those who need us most, like the Sheffield resident who said, “If it hadn’t been for you, I’d have been 6 feet under by now.”

Whether it’s a sponsored challenge like Mick’s or hosting your own event – big or small – you can make a real difference. You can help provide support to people during times of crisis, bereavement, or simply when they say they are fine but really need someone to talk to.

Coming up in November, SYCLS very own Co-CEO Baz Gascoyne will be performing a comedy night (contact lydia@sycls.co.uk for tickets), and one of our staff Listeners is hosting a clothes swap. The possibilities are endless! Whether it’s something fun, challenging, or meaningful to you, we love to see people combining their passions with fundraising to create a positive impact.

Do something you love. Do something that challenges you. Do it for SYCLS.
